TUBURAN, meaning spring or water source, is Loboc ‘s experiment and attempt to build the foundations of cultural research, documentation, training and creation as a lasting legacy of its creative spirit. As a potent source of community livelihood driven by the dynamic force of arts and culture, TUBURAN will be a vehicle to fuse into a wholistic process both the entrepreneurial and artistic sides of the Lobocanon artist and community.

Its prime movers are Loboc’s artists and cultural workers who have been teaching music in the town, seeing to it that Loboc’s musical legacy will never be forgotten. The artistic genius of Loboc needs to be conserved and taught to the following generation with greater proficiency, love, and respect.

In collaboration with the METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF MANILA, TUBURAN’s main mission is to preserve and revitalize Loboc’s musical heritage towards strengthening the Lobocanon community’s sense of cultural identity and appreciation of arts and culture as forces for development. Its main strategies are:

  • RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION OF LOBOC’S MUSICAL HERITAGE
  • TRAINING AND PRODUCTION/PERFORMANCE OF LOBOC’S MUSICAL HERITAGE
  • DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY LIVELIHOOD BASED ON LOBOCANON MUSICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE COMMUNITY
  • EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY ON LOBOCANON ARTS AND CULTURE

Organizationally, TUBURAN is currently a program nurtured under the wings of the Loboc Multipurpose Socio-Cultural Cooperative and has a transition project staff. In due time TUBURAN will transform towards a more stable and proficient cultural institution, a Center for Living Traditions. Its main tasks as of the moment are:

  • Human and Cultural
  • Resource Development Program
  • Development Resource Mobilization

Presently, the foundations for the establishment of the TUBURAN CENTER FOR LIVING TRADITIONS are being laid within the physical base of the centuries-old Loboc Convent, a national historical landmark and a national cultural treasure. In cooperation with the Diocese of Tagbilaran, this national heritage site will be the haven, the home, the base of all the envisioned activities that will give life to the strategies enumerated above. What is now a large edifice with so much unutilized space in dire need of a major restoration will gradually give birth to TUBURAN'S different dream projects:

a. A Church Museum showcasing religious artifacts and reliquaries

b. A Community Music Museum and History or Lifestyle Museum, to be run and built by community members themselves displaying the town's heirloom and historical relics

c. A music and arts training center which will be the foundation of a School of Music where the maestros and cantoras will be occupied in handing down Loboc's musical legacies

d. A small performance venue for the Children's choir and other choral and musical ensembles

e. A rehearsal and performance venue for the instrumental ensembles

f. A documentation center and archive of cultural resources, especially musical archival materials

g. A cafe and cultural souvenir shop

h. A number of rooms serving bed and breakfast for transient visitors

i. A seminar and a conference room that will regularly organize symposia, conferences, workshops on Cultural Heritage, Musicology and the like.
